The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
